This is a floor, not a forecast. Most adults spend longer than the minimum at each belt, and your coach decides when you're promoted.

Minimum from blue belt to black belt: 4.5 years. Adult ranks only; the IBJJF also sets minimum ages.

What the minimums mean

The IBJJF graduation system sets a minimum time an adult must spend at each belt before the next one: 2 years at blue, 1.5 years at purple and 1 year at brown. There's no minimum at white belt. The estimator adds that minimum to your last promotion date to show the earliest date the rule allows.

That date is a floor, not a forecast. Most adults spend longer than the minimum at each belt — how often you train, what you can do on the mat and your coach's standards matter far more than the calendar. Promotions are your coach's decision, and many academies promote on their own timeline.

Kids' belts follow a separate system, and the IBJJF's minimum ages can mean a longer wait for younger athletes. If you compete, check the current IBJJF rules for the exact requirements.

Questions

BJJ belt time FAQ

How long does it take to get a blue belt in BJJ?

There's no IBJJF minimum time at white belt, so it depends on your coach and how often you train. Many adults spend somewhere between one and three years at white belt, but there's no rule.

What is the IBJJF minimum time at each belt?

For adults: 2 years at blue before purple, 1.5 years at purple before brown, and 1 year at brown before black. White belt has no minimum. The IBJJF also sets minimum ages for each belt.

How long does it take to get a black belt in BJJ?

Under the IBJJF minimums alone, at least 4.5 years after reaching blue belt. In practice most people take much longer — around a decade is commonly cited.

Will I be promoted once I reach the minimum?

Not necessarily. Meeting the minimum only means the federation rule no longer stands in the way. Your coach decides when you're promoted, based on your skill, consistency and readiness.
